Acquisition & Demolition Will Create Open Space Greenbelt Around Southern Boundary of Waterway for Residents to Enjoy
Brookhaven Town Councilman Timothy Mazzei, Suffolk County Legislator Jack Eddington and other officials helped to demolish the last remaining commercial structure located on the shore of Swan Lake in East Patchogue on Tuesday, September 15th
Brookhaven acquired the building in June for $280,000 with funds from the “Clean Water Open Space Bond Act of 2004. This is the last in a series of purchases of buildings on the lakefront, which have been demolished to create an park along the shore – revealing sweeping views of Swan Lake from Montauk Highway for the first time in over 50 years.
Swan Lake is a key source of freshwater for the South Shore Estuary, and is of only a few free-flowing, spring-fed streams on Long Island that have remained in a relatively natural state.
